Google has updated its Material Design guidelines. The update includes a guide on navigation drawer and launcher icons, and a “what’s new” section, which will be the place where future updates to the guidelines are explained.

Google also released another sizeable update, adding a section to guide developers and designers on when and how to use floating action buttons, along with new guidelines for data tables, the general app structure and guidance on important units and measures, plus much more.

Here is the full list of Google’s changes.

Additional significant content updates include:

  • Typography adds more guidance on style and line height for dense and tall languages
  • Cards includes more specifications for the placement of actions and content
  • Dialogs contains additional layout guidance
  • Tabsadds guidance on tab content and more complete size specifications
  • Scroll adds guidance for overlay content

In short, with this latest update of the guidelines Google seems more complete and to answer all those developers and designers who had doubts about how to apply certain elements in Material Design at a given moment, and is now more specific about the things that seem to have emerged as points of interest in Material Design.

The floating action button, for example, has become without a doubt one of the elements that attract the most attention in Material Design. Google has paid special attention to this button, clarifying even more when to use it, and what it should be able to do. A couple of new patterns have even been defined for quick actions with the FAB, and Google has new recommendations for speed dial too.

On the other hand, Google answers more questions about the general app structure of Material Design, including advice on when to use certain navigation structures and how to make your app’s home screen rewarding for both new and frequent users.
